UK issues travel warning over potential violent protests amid Cape Town taxi strike

The United Kingdom (UK) has issued a warning to travellers following the ongoing taxi strike in Cape Town.

Earlier today, the UK government issued an alert to caution travellers. It reads: ‘Information about current strikes affecting Cape Town, which have the potential to turn violent and may impact multiple areas including journeys to and from the airport.’

The notice is accompanied by a note about the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, which provides advice about the risks of travelling to help British nationals ‘make informed decisions’.

The alert comes amid the ongoing South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) strike action, which started on Thursday. In a statement, the City of Cape Town condemned the acts of violence and lawlessness associated with the strike: ‘The City and partners invite Santaco to return to talks following their withdrawal last week, but importantly, public violence and intimidation must first cease immediately. There can be no fruitful discussion or negotiation until the violence and intimidation stops,’ says Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

‘While we respect the right to peaceful protest, violence and intimidation have no place in Cape Town.’
